The Oregon Shared Parenting Alliance was developed
by citizens as a response to our destructive family
court system.
Currently in our state, Oregon divorce law
automatically strips
custody of a child/children away from one parent
(almost always the father), even if that parent
has done nothing wrong and had not consented to
the divorce in the first place.

Oregon law has NO provision for joint custody unless
BOTH parties agree. Despite overwhelming evidence that
kids of divorce are much healthier when they have as
much time as possible with both parents, tens of
thousands of Oregon children are living without the
benefit of two loving parents actively involved in their
lives. In some cases, children are left in unsafe and
transitory environments despite the fact a loving and
responsible non-cusotdial parent wants to care for them.Non-custodial parents are usually granted only
4 days of so-called 'parenting time' by the courts,
effectively eliminating the positive influence that
parent could have on their child(ren). Instilling
values, enforcing reasonable discipline and creating
healthy boundaries requires more than 4 days a month.
It does not have to be this way. No child should lose
access to a parent and no responsible parent should be
forced to become marginalized as a visitor in their
child’s life simply because the parents no longer live
together.
The winner-take-all divorce lottery needs to be
replaced with shared parenting, which preserves the
rights of children to maintain quality relationships
with both of their parents when families dissolve.
The tide is turning...men and women all
across America are recognizing the benefits of shared
parenting for children and our society. Progress is
being made...polls show that 75-80% of Americans support
our position.
JOIN WITH US as we work to reform family law in
Oregon and assure children a continuing relationship
with both parents. |
